"synopsis" may belong to another edition of this title. Diogenes of Sinope was an ancient Greek philosopher and self-proclaimed Citizen of the World who, at different points, allegedly lived in a wine barrel (or possibly another kind of jar), urinated on guests at a banquet, and made a regular practice of insulting famous figures and lecturing shoppers in the marketplace. It also includes an extensively annotated translation of Diogenes Laertius' Life of Diogenes of Sinope, which is our principal source of information about the philosopher. This comprehensive study reconstructs his biography on the basis of classical and Arabic sources, identifies the main ideas and principles of his philosophy, and shows the application of his philosophical message for our contemporary world. He was most likely a student of the philosopher Antisthenes (445-365 BCE) and, in the words of Plato (allegedly), was A Socrates gone mad. Diogenes of Sinope (or Diogenes the Cynic) was an Ancient Greek philosopher. The task of reconstructing the philosopher's life, however, is exceedingly difficult, because in his case, more than in those of other ancient philosophers, we must deal not only with the scarcity of reliable sources and testimonies, but also with the mountains of anecdotal and fictional accounts that are responsible for the creation of a veritable literary legend around the Cynic who once lived in a tub. 404-323 BCE) was a Greek Cynic philosopher best known for holding a lantern to the faces of the citizens of Athens claiming he was searching for an honest man. The life and teachings of Diogenes of Sinope, the Greek philosopher who gave rise to classical Cynicism, deserve careful consideration because of their relevance to contemporary ethical issues. Diogenes of Sinope was born in what is now modern-day Turkey around 400 B.C., in the generation after the great philosopher Socrates, and practiced philosophy in the milieu of famous contemporaries such as Plato. However, the eccentric Diogenes of Sinope is far and away Cynicism’s most famous (or infamous) follower.
