We can drive the clock through most scoreboard interfaces with Newtek's built-in software. Even though it doesn't have all the animations that a typical ESPN Bug Box does, they are thrilled with how clean and clear the bug is, and it can do all of the popups/chiclets/changes that ESPN requires. The score bug is driven with Livetext with the LT Scoreboards plugin to provide easy operator control. We are now using a hybrid two-channel graphics system for our broadcasts. Our production trucks are based around a Tricaster 8000 for the primary switcher. I know you said no network inputs, but I figured I'd give an example of someone using Nets successfully for a similar scope show. We do care about cost, so this graphics system is a hybrid approach balancing ease of use and cost. Right now my company is working a number of ESPN3 series for college conferences.
